Autotomy, meaning self-amputation, is a mechanism that occurs in some animals to escape from predators or other external threats. In crabs, it has the added benefit of stimulating moulting.

 

Claws are important parts for mating, hunting and locomotion; but the crab will still intentionally shed them off and render itself vulnerable, leaving familiar securities in pursuit of possibilities for growth and transformation.
