Weed Legitimisation Project (East Singapore)

2022
Found weeds, laser print on card, laboratory equipment, light

Almost reactionary to the repeal of Section 377A, Siew uses Weed Legitimisation Project to express his frustration with the binaries of inclusion and exclusion, and the need to justify non-conventional existences. Role-playing as the “fake scientist”, Siew sets up an allegorical experiment where he collects weed samples growing out from cracks in concrete, originating from 15 different sites systematically sampled across East Singapore. The immersive installation gives viewers the opportunity to flip through faux science notes and news articles, touching on themes of systemic violence when the fringe are uprooted and displaced into settings of scientific denotation.

Exhibited for One Night Only 2024: Fluid Fringes over at LASALLE College of the Arts Singapore.
