Diving for Pearls

2021
White stoneware clay, black smooth clay
Installation

Diving for Pearls is a play on words and form to create innuendo. Innocent pitcher plant busts could also be seen as vulvic protrusions from the ground, playing on Man's disposition to fixate on sex. Siew primarily bases Diving for Pearls off of Freud's theory of penis envy and Lacan's theory of desire, where the negative spaces in the pitcher cups connote the absence of the phallus and by extension are symbolic for all of man’s objects of desire.
