Autotomy, meaning self-amputation, is a mechanism that occurs in some animals to escape from predators or other external threats. In crabs, it has the added benefit of stimulating moulting. Claws are important parts for mating, hunting and locomotion; but the crab will still intentionally shed them off and render itself vulnerable, leaving familiar securities in pursuit of possibilities for growth and transformation.
This work consists of soft sculptures depicting the aftermath of these self-amputations. Bright stipples adorn their surfaces, bringing to mind the minutiae of sand that crumbles from discarded crab shells while also recalling the vibrant reefs that these sands eventually sink to. Accompanying the sculptures are recordings that tap into a selection of short stories that mull over Siew’s connection to growth and transformation; various points of departure from the Mommy and Daddy Crab.
Exhibited for Colour Show (2023) over at Supper House @ Tagore.
